Anyone that knows me well enough knows I harbour deep resentment for hipsterdom and all it encompasses. Imagine the divine glee with which I absorbed the fantastic satirical sports coverage of the Hipster Olympics, embedded below.
My favourite line: And they’re back to the mirror! They’ve gone back to the Mirror! I haven’t seen performances like this since last year’s Douchebag Summer Games out in sunny Santa Monica, California.
It’s always impressive what a fresh coat of paint can do to one’s spirits! After a long hiatus marked by progressive digital decay, robmaguire.com has been revamped. Wordpress is now my weapon of choice, having quickly fallen in love with it after taking my new job at the National Film Board of Canada’s CitizenShift ( their blogs are powered by the software.)
Now cleaner, whiter, and arguably a little sexier (which has nothing to do with the whiteness—I’m no blog racist after all), this site should see an increase in action in the weeks and months to come.
There are still a handful of bugs to fix, which should be taken care of over the next few days. If you notice anything awry, or have comments or suggestions, please leave a comment.
Finally, please take a moment to subscribe to my RSS feed, where I promise to wow you with my irrelevance with greater ease than ever before.
While I will be updating this blog from time to time, my current online focus is Art Threat, an online journal of political art. It is the online component of überculture’s latest project, which should hopefully publish a print version of our political art magazine by year’s end. Please do visit, and leave and comments or suggestions you may have.
The New Yorker has just published a revealing article by vetern investigative journalist Seymour Hersh highlighting the extent to which the US was aware of Israel’s war plans, and how the conflict was seen as a test run for a larger war with Iran. Given Israel’s failure to win the conlict, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some Pentagon policy wonks working overtime to dream up reasons why their pseudo-simulator didn’t turn out as hoped.
Some choice excerpts from the article:
ìThe White House was more focussed on stripping Hezbollah of its missiles, because, if there was to be a military option against Iranís nuclear facilities, it had to get rid of the weapons that Hezbollah could use in a potential retaliation at Israel.”
The Bush White House ìhas been agitating for some time to find a reason for a pre-emptive blow against Hezbollah… It was our intent to have Hezbollah diminished, and now we have someone else doing it [i.e. Israel]”
“Early this spring, according to a former senior intelligence official, high-level planners from the U.S. Air Forceóunder pressure from the White House to develop a war plan for a decisive strike against Iranís nuclear facilitiesóbegan consulting with their counterparts in the Israeli Air Force.”
ìThe Israelis told us it would be a cheap war with many benefits,î a U.S. government consultant with close ties to Israel said. ìWhy oppose it? Weíll be able to hunt down and bomb missiles, tunnels, and bunkers from the air. It would be a demo for Iran.î
Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage: ìIf the most dominant military force in the regionóthe Israel Defense Forcesócanít pacify a country like Lebanon, with a population of four million, you should think carefully about taking that template to Iran, with strategic depth and a population of seventy million.”
Time for a break from work to make some baba ghanoush with the bbq'd eggplant that has finally cooled below hand-burning temperatures. #yumabout 40 minutes agofrom HootSuite
